Introduction

In this post, I’ll use my roster construction model to evaluate the Celtics, Cavaliers, and Timberwolves trade deadline moves. I’m covering these teams together because they are in a similar spot, contenders trying to raise their ceiling to compete for a championship.

I’ll evaluate each team’s trade deadline based on how it impacted the roster’s:

• Ceiling: change in Projected Net Rating

• Synergy: change in total synergy score

• Timeline: alignment with the competitive window

Projected Net Rating is an estimate based on aggregated player Current Ability (CA). It’s used to evaluate underlying roster strength independent of results so far this season.

Synergy scores are assigned to each five-archetype lineup combination based on how those combinations have performed after adjusting for player CA. Total synergy score is the sum of synergy scores across the eligible lineups a team can access given the distribution of archetypes on its roster. The roster construction model searches for which archetype additions maximize total synergy score and evaluates whether a trade increases or decreases overall team synergy.

Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics traded Anfernee Simons and a second-round pick to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Nikola Vučević and a second-round pick. The move gives Boston much needed depth at center, while moving off Simons, who they likely wouldn’t have been able to re-sign this summer.

Here’s how the trade impacts Boston’s ceiling, synergy, and timeline.

Ceiling

Below is Boston’s current roster with their Season Rating (SR) and Current Ability (CA). You can view the full player ratings database and read about the methodology here.

According to the roster construction model’s trade evaluator, Boston remains 7th in Projected Net Rating after the swap, shifting from +4.3 (51 wins) pre-trade to +4.2 (50.8 wins) post-trade.

Ceiling grade: C

Synergy

The roster construction model’s archetype search identified Versatile Big and Connector (Big) as the top archetype additions by synergy score. From an archetype standpoint, Vučević is a near-perfect match because he is a Versatile Big with Connector as his secondary archetype.

As a Shot Creator, Simons’ skill set is more redundant given Boston already has three ball-dominant guards in Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, and Payton Pritchard who are above him in the rotation. According to the trade evaluator, the result of the swap is a significant increase in Boston’s total synergy score.

Synergy grade: A

Timeline

This trade is primarily about tax timing and flexibility, with the bigger picture being positioning the team for Jayson Tatum’s return. Boston absorbed Nikola Vučević using the existing $22.5 million Kristaps Porziņģis Traded Player Exception (TPE), which converts Anfernee Simons’ outgoing salary into a new $27.7 million TPE usable through February 5, 2027. That exception gives Boston a mechanism to add salary later without sending matching money.

Moving off Simons’ contract dropped Boston below the first apron. Subsequent deadline moves also put them in position to duck the luxury tax entirely for the 2025–26 season. If they stay below the tax line again next season, they can reset the repeater tax clock.

That timeline also aligns with Tatum’s return, giving the team a full season to get him back to his best before going all-in in the years that follow. With the repeater clock reset, Boston can re-sign their core in 2028 and spend aggressively on a championship roster without immediately facing repeater-level tax multipliers.

Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded guard Darius Garland and a second-round pick to the LA Clippers in exchange for James Harden. The move gives Cleveland a veteran, elite shot creator to pair with Donovan Mitchell, while moving off Garland, whose injuries have made him a reliability question for a team trying to win now.

Additionally, Cleveland picked up Dennis Schröder and Keon Ellis, sending De'Andre Hunter to the Sacramento Kings and Lonzo Ball to the Utah Jazz, where he was subsequently waived.

Here’s how the trade impacts Cleveland’s ceiling, synergy, and timeline.

Ceiling

According to the roster construction model’s trade evaluator, Cleveland jumps from 9th to 4th in Projected Net Rating after the swap, shifting from +2.9 (47.5 wins) pre-trade to +5.7 (54.5 wins) post-trade. Which pushes Cleveland back into the top tier of title contenders after a poor first half of the season.

Synergy

When targeting multiple roster slots, the model evaluates archetype additions jointly, optimizing the combined impact of the full set rather than selecting each archetype in isolation. In Cleveland’s case, the archetype search identified Secondary Ball Handler, Movement Shooter, and Versatile Big as the additions that maximize total synergy score. Interpreting that result, Cleveland would benefit from (1) center depth with a different profile than Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, ideally a big who can score in the post and space the floor, (2) a secondary creator who can run the offense when Donovan Mitchell sits and remain productive off-ball alongside him, and (3) a wing who can space the floor and create shots by navigating screens.

While Harden is a significant upgrade over Garland, maximizing his partnership with Mitchell requires him to stay productive off-ball and use the reduced on-ball responsibility to increase his defensive effort. Ellis brings valuable point-of-attack defense, but at 6’4”, 175 pounds he will struggle to lock down bigger wings. Schröder provides shot creation and playmaking off the bench, though at 6’1” he only makes an already undersized backcourt even smaller.

Cleveland still did not add another big or a wing to replace Hunter. In addition to that, the trade evaluator shows a slight decrease in the team’s total synergy score after the deadline.

Timeline

With Donovan Mitchell’s extension status uncertain, Cleveland’s decision to go all-in and position itself as a legitimate contender was the right move. If another early playoff exit had led to Mitchell leaving, the best this core would have to show for it would be two conference semifinals appearances, even after a 64-win season.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves traded Rob Dillingham, Leonard Miller, and four second-round picks to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Ayo Dosunmu and Julian Phillips. The move adds an efficient secondary scoring option and a reliable ball handler in Dosunmu. I will also be including Mike Conley on the roster for this analysis, given reports that he is expected to return as a free agent.

Here’s how the trade impacts Minnesota’s ceiling, synergy, and timeline.

Ceiling

According to the roster construction model’s trade evaluator, Minnesota remains 6th in Projected Net Rating after the move, improving from +4.3 (51 wins) pre-trade to +4.8 (52.3 wins) post-trade. Dosunmu is a solid addition, but he doesn’t move Minnesota into the next tier.

Synergy

The roster construction model identified Playmaker as by far the archetype that increases Minnesota’s total synergy score the most. Donte DiVincenzo, Bones Hyland, and Mike Conley do not fill that role at a high enough level. None of the three have Playmaker as a primary archetype, and Hyland is the only one with Playmaker listed as a secondary. The second and third ranked archetypes are Connector (Big) and Roll Man, indicating a need for additional depth at center. The non-Gobert minutes have been a weakness, as Naz Reid is not strong enough defensively to anchor those stretches.

Dosunmu adds reliable ball handling and efficient shooting, but he is not the level of playmaker the model is looking for. Still, with no core players leaving, the trade evaluator shows a modest increase in Minnesota’s total synergy score.

Synergy grade: B

Timeline:

Anthony Edwards is 24, and Dosunmu is 26 and entering his prime. Because Edwards defines Minnesota’s competitive window, the fact that Dosunmu’s prime years overlap directly with Edwards’ is significant. If the Timberwolves are strong enough to win a title at any point during this window, Dosunmu will still be in his prime rather than aging out of the core before that opportunity arrives.

The key question is retention. Minnesota holds Dosunmu’s Bird rights, which allows them to exceed the salary cap to re-sign him this summer. Given that they gave up four second-round picks to acquire him, it is reasonable to assume they expect to keep him.

Timeline grade: A (contingent on re-signing Dosunmu)
